WALLFLOWER WOMEN

In a world that seems to predominantly revolve around Kylie Jenner and the likes, who are the women who do not advertise Flat Tummy Tea on their Instagrams? The girls and women who don’t look up to the Kardashian Klan as role models? Whose lives centre around something – anything – other than Keeping Up, even if the media suggests no such people could exist?

Hatti Rees, a Central Saint Martins design student in the second year of her BA Womenswear degree, seeks to explore just those women,  who “do not fit the mould”, by investigating themes of domestic oppression, turmoils of working life, sustainable glamour and dystopian futurism.

In an effort to examine the boundaries of the modern woman, Rees teamed up with other young professionals and creatives. Photographed by Molly Barber, this shoot also features shoes designed by Ben Mak and accessories designed by Della Reed

The first images are reflections on female domesticity. Inspired by images of housewives in the 1950’s and 70’s, Rees sought to create a world in which the woman is captured by the home, slowly blending into the wallpaper and morphing into the shapes of sofas and curtains.

“Styled by Luke Smith and Borys Korban, hair by Jake Gallagher and makeup by Robyn Fitzsimmons we wanted it to look as if she was trapped in a painting.”

“The first image featuring the green garment entitled ‘Rossetti’s domesticity’ is my modern musing on Rossetti’s portrait of Veronica Veronese in ‘La Ghirlandata’, the depiction of a caged woman, enshrouded with secrets and effervescent beauty but hopeful.

The second image of Maisie, in the black entitled ‘Mondo De Silenzio’ to me represents the sadder side, the woman who is truly trapped in her circumstances, trapped in a mass of fabric with a lost guise.“
