Kurt Johnson first entered KING KONG’s orbit when he directed and styled the eerie, seductive story, Necromancy, which then went on to be one of the breakout stars of our first issue. We have been getting better acquainted with Kurt and his inimitable style ever since. In fact, he has now joined London boy Davey Sutton as our second Fashion Editor, forming a trans-Atlantic (Kurt has just relocated to New York) partnership to be reckoned with.
Much of Kurt’s work is reflective of his own personal style, which he describes as brutal, sexual, in your face and unforgiving. He effortlessly marries high fashion elements with fetish wear and BDSM accoutrements, elevating the lewd to elegant new heights of aesthetic appeal.
This Is The New Shit was inspired by the Sydney creatives that populate Kurt’s hedonistic world. A gang who are unapologetically themselves and refuse to fit the toned, tanned Australian mould. This story celebrates the darker more diverse side of Sydney that tends to go unnoticed.
Kurt has already made his KK Digital debut, with Brisbane Fonda and Celia’s Universe and will continue to inject his characteristic energy into the platform in the months to come. He has also creative directed two stories for KING KONG Issue 2 so keep your eyes peeled for that at the end of September…
