NO FLAGS NO RULES

Gender bending and exploring queerness in art is old news when considering the heavily male-model-explores-femininity weighed photography. Madrid-based photographer Giorgia Faga shot Gema Lopez in an attempt to question the boundaries of femininity, without having to resort to masculinity.

Giorgia Faga: In these pictures I wanted to tell the story of a suburban girl moving around at night time. I left Gema totally free to pose and move as she liked and I just followed her around – I loved her! I also took some pictures with my iPhone because I like the spontaneous feeling that you get, shooting with a mobile.

After finding her on Instagram and being inspired by Gema Lopez’ anti-style, she knew she wanted to shoot her, aligning Lopez’ radical look with her self-proclaimed ‘crude’ work. Faga is left unimpressed by the conventional model type that she describes as old fashioned. “I like people with personality and I think that these kinds of boys and girls can tell incredible stories through their peculiarity. At the moment, the concept of what constitutes a “model” is changing a lot. Now, agencies and photographers are looking more and more for characters and not just for beautiful people.”
