1. The definition of a fancy dan is a show off who usually doesn’t have actual skills.
2. One of the Marvel Comics villains.
What was the concept behind this particular shoot?
Artifice and Beauty. We were interested in playing with the idea of a beauty story using prosthetics and trying some opposing tropes of masculinity like ‘The Skinhead’ vs. ‘The Dandy’. But then disrupt the beauty ideals of either archetype through proportion or styling.
How would you describe your style?
I like to change with the seasons; trends and fads are super fascinating to me, whether I wear a specific trend or not, I really enjoy that dialogue and trying new ideas of how I can look. But my go-tos are usually a little post-gender with a little bit dandy and playing with my silhouette in a strong colour.
Why did you start doing what you’re doing?
I started performing this character NEOCAMP kind of organically because I was performing my music, and this other idea of a self took over. It’s become a vehicle to explore performative identity through the various lenses of media: social, artistic or commercial.
What inspires you the most?
Tension. When something creates tension successfully, it’s articulating a perspective that people aren’t used to, which gets me off.
Also collaboration. For instance, working with Oscar on this shoot pushed me (and I think him) in ways I didn’t even expect and energises my ideas for the next project.
