Rockets on we’re arm in arm

N.A.S.A nude you’re manly you

Oh American soldier

Gun me down with Yankee power

Cock pit tom with army charm

The eagle lands army commands

Oh American soldier

America’s boy

Cowboy corn & bugle horn

You are dean and me the queen

Oh American soldier

America’s boy

The lyrics of “America’s Boy” enshrine the values of a retrograde but increasingly evident America. The results of the Presidential election on Tuesday heralded the dawn, or perhaps the zenith of a new age of post-factual politics, built upon the cult of personality, tabloid sensationalism and a very fast and loose relationship with the truth. America once again chose a boy, rather than a girl, to lead them into battle. A boy with a penchant for sexist remarks and behaviour, racial slurs and divisive rhetoric, rather than a girl with a long and varied track record as a public servant, fighting for the rights and liberties of women, children and minorities.

America’s Boy is Andrew Jackson, reincarnated for the Twitter generation. A gun-toting, horn-blowing, oil-pumping, red-blooded male with a loud, angry voice masking his fear of everyone and everything that he does not, will not understand. Whether you think he’s the breath of fresh air you’ve been waiting for, or an orange lunatic come to kill us all, America’s Boy says what he means and he seems to be here to stay. Roll on 2020!
